How to use the solver
- Pick Easy, Medium or Hard. The puzzle for your date is already loaded.
- Place the dominoes you've already got: tap a domino in the tray, then a square, then a neighboring square.
- Press “Check my board” to see which of your dominoes fit. The ones that don't turn red.
- Press “Reveal a tile” for one more domino. Tap an empty square first if you want the tile for that spot.
The rules in 30 seconds
- Every domino is used once.
- Each domino covers two neighboring squares, and you can turn it any way.
- A number means the pips in that region add up to it.
- = means every half in the region shows the same number. ≠ means they're all different.
- < and > set a limit: the total stays under (<) or over (>) that number.
- Squares with no color have no rule and only have to be covered. A domino can cross from one region into another.
Solving tips that actually help
- Start with one-square regions and tight sums. They often allow only one domino.
- A sum of 0, or a limit of <1, can only be blanks.
- An = region of three or more squares often pins down a double.
Questions & answers
Why is my tile marked as fitting when NYT's solution has something else there?
Pips can have more than one answer, and any board that meets every region counts. Check compares your tiles with every valid solution, not only the official one.
Does it show the whole answer?
No. One tile per click. The full solution is on today's Pips page, behind its last hint.
Which puzzle does it load?
The one for your own date, like the NYT app. A small switch above the board opens another day when one is available.
Is it free?
Yes, with nothing to install.
Why won't Reveal place a tile?
If a domino on your board doesn't fit, a reveal could mislead you, so it holds back. Press “Check my board” to find the domino, fix it, then reveal again.
