LinkedIn Tango Strategy: Tips to Solve Every Puzzle

What the board is asking you to do
Tango is played on a 6×6 grid where every cell eventually holds a sun or a moon. Each row and each column must end up with exactly three suns and three moons, and you can never have three identical symbols in a row next to each other, horizontally or vertically. Some cell pairs are connected by a small "=" or "×" symbol printed between them: "=" means the two cells must match, and "×" means they must be opposite. Unlike some grid puzzles, Tango has no rule that every row has to be unique from every other row, so don't waste time hunting for a "no duplicate rows" contradiction — it isn't there.
The pair rule: two in a row forces the third
Whenever you see two identical symbols sitting next to each other in a row or column, the cell immediately on either open side of that pair must be the opposite symbol, because three in a row is never allowed. If columns 2 and 3 of a row both show a sun, column 1 and column 4 of that row can't be suns — at least one of them has to be a moon to break up the run, and often both are forced once you check the count for that row.
The gap rule: a symbol with a gap on both sides
A related pattern shows up when two identical symbols are separated by a single empty cell, like sun, blank, sun. That middle cell can't be a sun, because that would create three suns in a row — so it has to be a moon. This gap rule is easy to miss because the two suns aren't touching, but the logic is identical to the pair rule: three consecutive matching symbols are always illegal.
Counting what's left in a row or column
Every row and column has a hard limit of three suns and three moons. As soon as a row fills three cells with suns, every remaining empty cell in that row must be a moon, even if none of those cells are adjacent to each other. This counting check is worth doing after every placement, because it often finishes an entire row in one step once you're three-quarters of the way through it, without needing to look at adjacency at all.
Chaining "=" and "×" clues
The "=" and "×" symbols let you propagate a known value across the board like a chain. If cell A is a sun and A "=" B, then B is a sun too. If B "×" C, then C must be a moon. Follow the chain as far as it goes before moving on — a single confirmed cell at one end of a long chain of "=" and "×" links can determine four or five other cells in one pass, especially on boards where several linked pairs cluster together.
Edge tricks
Cells along the top row or the left column have fewer neighbors to reason about, which sometimes makes them easier, not harder. A corner cell only has two directions to check for adjacency instead of four, so pair and gap patterns resolve there with less to track. It's also worth scanning the edges first for any row or column that already has two placed symbols plus a linked "=" or "×" clue touching a third cell — edges are where these combinations tend to close out fastest because there's less competing information to sort through.
A mini example
Imagine a row that starts with sun, sun, and then an "×" link between the third and fourth cells. The pair rule says the third cell can't be a sun, so it must be a moon. The "×" link then flips the fourth cell to a sun. That row now has three suns and one moon placed in four cells, so the remaining two cells must both be moons to hit the three-and-three count — and if either of those last two cells sits next to another moon elsewhere in the column, that adjacency information carries over and helps solve a neighboring row too.
Work the most constrained lines first
Not every row or column offers the same amount of information at the start. Scan the board for the row or column that already has the most symbols placed, or the most "=" and "×" links running through it, and work that one first. A row with four of six cells already filled has far fewer legal combinations left than one with only one or two cells filled, so it resolves faster and often hands you a confirmed symbol that ripples into a neighboring column. Treat the board like a queue: solve the most-constrained line, recheck the whole grid for new pair, gap, or counting opportunities that placement created, then move to the next most-constrained line.
Double-check before locking in a guess
Because Tango combines three separate rules — the three-and-three count, the no-three-in-a-row rule, and the "=" and "×" links — it's easy to satisfy two of them and accidentally violate the third. Before you commit to a placement you're not fully certain about, walk through all three checks explicitly: does this keep the row or column at three and three or under, does it avoid creating three identical symbols in a row, and does it respect every linked cell touching it? Puzzles that feel like they've reached a dead end usually haven't — they just have one elimination left that a full three-rule check would catch.
