Mini Sudoku Tips: How to Solve the 6x6 Puzzle Fast

The 6x6 grid at a glance

Mini Sudoku uses a 6×6 grid split into six boxes, each shaped 2 rows by 3 columns (or 3 by 2, depending on orientation). Every row, every column, and every box has to contain the digits 1 through 6 exactly once each. It's smaller than a standard 9×9 Sudoku, which means fewer candidates per cell, but it also means each clue carries more weight — a single placed digit in a 6-cell box rules out a full sixth of that box immediately.

Hidden singles: the fastest win

A hidden single is a digit that can only go in one cell within a row, column, or box, even though that cell might still show several other candidates. To find one, pick a digit and a box, then check every empty cell in that box for whether the digit is already blocked by that cell's row or column. If five of the six cells in a box are blocked from holding a 4, whether by a 4 already in their row or their column, the sixth cell must be the 4, regardless of what else looks possible there. Hidden singles are usually the quickest technique to apply because you're scanning for one digit at a time rather than juggling every candidate in a cell at once.

Naked pairs: two cells, two candidates

A naked pair happens when two cells in the same row, column, or box both have exactly the same two candidate digits and nothing else. Since those two digits have to go somewhere between those two cells, no other cell sharing that row, column, or box can hold either digit anymore. If two cells in a box both show only 2 and 5 as candidates, every other cell in that box can have 2 and 5 removed from its candidate list, even if you don't yet know which cell gets which digit. This often clears enough clutter to reveal a hidden single somewhere else in the same box.

Box and row interactions

Because the boxes are 2×3 or 3×2 rather than square, a box overlaps with either two rows and three columns, or three rows and two columns, which creates interaction patterns worth watching for. If a digit's remaining candidates in a box are all confined to a single row, that digit can be eliminated from the rest of that row outside the box, since the box guarantees the digit will land inside those specific cells. This works the same way in the other direction: a digit confined to one column within a box clears that column everywhere else outside the box.

A scanning order that works

Work through the grid in this order to avoid missing anything: scan for hidden singles first, since they're the cheapest technique and often chain into more singles as you place digits. Once singles dry up, look for naked pairs in boxes with the most filled cells, since those boxes have fewer open candidates to sort through. Finally, check box-row and box-column interactions on any box that still has three or more empty cells left. Repeating this cycle — singles, pairs, interactions — clears most 6×6 boards without needing deeper techniques.

A worked example

Say a box has five digits placed already, with only one empty cell left. Whatever digit is missing from 1 through 6 in that box has to go in that last cell — that's a hidden single by definition, even though it looks almost too obvious to name. Now suppose solving that cell as a 6 means its row already had a 6 blocked in every other empty cell except one, elsewhere in the grid. That second cell becomes a hidden single too, purely as a consequence of the first placement. This kind of chain reaction is common in Mini Sudoku precisely because the grid is small: one confirmed digit often ripples into two or three more within a couple of moves.

When you genuinely need to guess

Most 6×6 boards resolve entirely through hidden singles, naked pairs, and box interactions, but occasionally you'll hit a point where every remaining cell has two or more candidates and no forcing technique applies. When that happens, pick the cell with only two candidates rather than three, since a two-way guess is right half the time and wrong branches reveal themselves faster on a small grid. Note your choice, follow the forced consequences it creates, and if you hit a contradiction — the same digit needed twice in one row, column, or box — you know the other candidate was correct all along. Because a 6×6 grid has so few cells, this kind of trial-and-check rarely takes more than a step or two to resolve.

Keep the candidates visible

Rather than solving from memory, jot small candidate numbers into empty cells as you eliminate possibilities, especially once you're using naked pairs or box-row interactions. A cell that looks like it has three options at a glance might already be down to one once you account for every row, column, and box constraint together — but that's only obvious if you've been tracking eliminations on paper or on screen rather than trying to hold the whole board's candidates in your head. This habit matters more on Mini Sudoku than it might seem, since the boxes' 2×3 shape creates interaction patterns that are easy to miss without a visual record.
